Cheyney University, the nation's 1st historically black university, 24 years before the start of the Civil War, provided education for people of African descent to prepare them for skilled jobs and teaching in Philadelphia. Innovation was at the very core of the school's founding. Cheyney's early leaders used innovative strategies to push their students forward, graduating some of the nation's earliest Black architects, lawyers, and doctors. In an effort to further Cheyney's initiative to provide real-time exposure to affordable life science lab spaces and to provide opportunities to new enterprising businesses and students of color across the university, the ThinkUbator project was born. The ThinkUbator project, now in the early design stages, is repurposing a campus building as a Life Sciences incubator that will offer biologics, cell, and gene therapy companies the opportunity to practically pursue their science in a campus setting by leasing the process development and wet lab space in an incubator building dedicated to private enterprise on the Cheyney Campus. This developing project offers opportunities to companies looking to get involved by supporting the establishment of the physical resource itself and offering leasing opportunities to companies looking for lab space in the Greater Philadelphia area, an emerging Life Sciences hub. The partnership between the project and the university provided opportunities to new enterprising businesses and students of color across the university. After an hour of networking with your Women in Bio peers, including wine, beer, and light bites, enjoy this uplifting and inspiring conversation with panelists Leslie Smallwood-Lewis, Co-Owner, Mosaic Development Partners and Partners with Mosiac Brokerage Group, Vanessa M. Atkins, Director - Life Sciences & Technology Hub at Cheyney University, and MaryFrances McGarrity, SVP Business Development Services, Chester County Economic Development Council, with Tom Piombino, Managing Director - Americas, IPS, who will facilitate this inspiring program and discussion.
